RTP means return to player: a theoretical long-run share of stakes returned as prizes under a game’s mathematics. It is not the chance of winning one spin and is not a refund percentage for one session.
A worked example
Suppose an illustrative game had 95% theoretical RTP. Across a sufficiently large volume of wagering, its model would imply a 5% house edge. On $1,000 of total wagering, the corresponding theoretical loss is $1,000 × 0.05 = $50. A real session can lose much more, lose less or finish ahead. The example is arithmetic, not the stated RTP of any game on this site.
Total wagering is different from money deposited or inserted. Replaying prizes adds more wagering without requiring an equally large new deposit. That is why the same starting balance can generate a much larger turnover figure.
RTP versus volatility
Two games can have similar theoretical returns while distributing prizes differently. Volatility describes the spread and unevenness of outcomes. Hit frequency concerns how often a qualifying win occurs. A small award that is less than the stake may still count as a winning event in a game’s statistics.
| Measure | Useful question | What it does not tell you |
|---|---|---|
| RTP | What does the long-run mathematical model return? | What you will receive today |
| Volatility | How uneven can the prize distribution be? | When the next feature will occur |
| Hit frequency | How often does a qualifying award occur? | Whether each award exceeds the stake |
| Maximum win | What is the upper award under stated conditions? | A normal or likely result |
Random outcomes and timing
An RNG is a random number generator used as part of selecting game outcomes. Watching recent spins, choosing a time of day or stopping an animation does not provide a reliable prediction of the next random result. A progressive prize meter can grow while the trigger remains uncertain.
A game may have a persistent feature state, but that must be specified in its rules. Do not infer one from artwork that looks nearly complete. Hold & Spin and linked jackpots explain two different kinds of feature state.
Why one RTP number may not fit a whole family
Titles can exist in different versions, markets and configurations. A percentage copied from an unrelated online edition or another jurisdiction may not describe a machine in South Australia. Read the installed game’s information and identify its exact version before using a number in a comparison.
For a practical starting point, read bet and paytable basics. South Australian operating requirements are published by SA.GOV.AU.
