Pokies in Tanunda: A Club and a Hotel Are Not the Same Door

Tanunda has two venues this guide can name, and they are different kinds of business: The Clubhouse — Tanunda Club at 45 MacDonnell Street, and Tanunda Hotel on Murray Street. A club and a hotel hold machines under different arrangements, and that changes who can simply walk in.

Play online: pokies, live dealer tables and sport

A venue keeps hours and a dress code, and the floor is a drive away. The same pokies and tables run online at any hour, most games have a demo mode so you can see how one pays before you stake anything, and deposits go through PayID or a bank transfer.

Two named venues in one town is unusual for this guide, and it is the reason this page is worth more than a driving time. Both list gaming. One of them is a hotel, which in Australian usage means a pub open to the public. The other is a club, which is a membership organisation that happens to run a kitchen and a gaming area. Those are not interchangeable, and the distinction decides whether you can walk through the door on a Saturday with no prior arrangement.

Why the club and the hotel are different problems

South Australia puts gaming machines in pubs and clubs. There are no dedicated arcades; the state has a single casino, in Adelaide, under its own separate licence. So far, so uncomplicated. The complication is that "pub" and "club" are not two words for the same thing.

A hotel trades with the general public. You arrive, you order, nobody asks what your relationship to the business is. A club is constituted around its members, and whatever arrangements it has for visitors — signing in, guest access, reciprocal rights with other clubs, nothing at all — are the club's own to set. This guide has not published those arrangements for the Tanunda Club because the club has not published them to us, and inventing an entry policy would be worse than useless: it would send somebody on a drive to a door that turns them around.

Which gives a short rule for this town. If you are not certain of your standing at a club, ring the club before you travel and ask what a visitor needs to do. If that answer is unsatisfying, the hotel on Murray Street is the venue whose category does not raise the question at all.

MacDonnell Street and Murray Street

Note the addresses, because they are the other thing that goes wrong here. The club is at 45 MacDonnell Street. The hotel is on Murray Street. Tanunda's Murray Street is not Angaston's Murray Street, and Angaston's is not Nuriootpa's; the valley has three main streets carrying the same name within a quarter of an hour of each other, which is the single most reliable way to arrive somewhere plausible and wrong.

This guide does not publish a street number for Tanunda Hotel because none has been established for it, and a number nobody can source is worse than an absent one. Use the business name when you navigate — the pin will have a label on it, and reading that label before pressing start takes a second. The equivalent trap on our own main street is unpicked on the Murray Street, Angaston page, and the next town west is covered under pokies in Nuriootpa.

If you are reading this from Tanunda

Most visitors to the valley sleep in Tanunda. It has the accommodation, it is in the middle, and booking engines point there by default. So this page has a second audience: not somebody driving west out of Angaston, but somebody sitting in a Tanunda guesthouse wondering what is further east.

For that reader, the answer is two hotels a couple of hundred metres apart on one street. Angaston Hotel is at 59 Murray Street and lists dining, a front bar, TAB, gaming machines and upstairs accommodation. Barossa Brauhaus Hotel is at 41 Murray Street and lists dining, bars, gaming, TAB and lotteries. They are separate businesses and the guide keeps them separate; the comparison is on pubs with pokies in Angaston, and the venue profile is at Angaston Hotel. What Angaston offers a Tanunda-based visitor is the thing Tanunda does not: two gaming venues close enough together that if one room is shut you have not wasted the evening, only a short walk.

Behind Angaston the land climbs into the Barossa Ranges, where Eden Valley, Springton and Mount Pleasant sit. Those are a different proposition again, and no gaming venue in any of them has been verified by this guide.

Twelve to fifteen minutes, and what the figure leaves out

Angaston to Tanunda runs roughly twelve to fifteen minutes on a clear run, and conditions move that around more than visitors expect. The route follows vineyard and creek boundaries rather than a straight line. Speed limits drop on the approach to town, and most of the time is spent in the slow part. Vintage season puts grape trucks and farm machinery on the same two lanes as you. Between the towns there is no street lighting, and kangaroos are active around dusk and well after it.

None of that makes the trip difficult. It makes a confident mental estimate unreliable, which only matters because you are driving towards two timetables you cannot look up. Neither Tanunda venue publishes gaming-area hours, and a gaming area in this state closes for a set period overnight by law in any case, so its timetable was never going to match the bar's.

Three things to settle before the car keys

  1. At the club: what does a visitor need to do? Ask in those words. Do not work it out from the website, which is written for members who already know.
  2. At either venue: is the gaming area open on your date, and until when? Name the day. A Sunday in the Barossa behaves nothing like a Friday, and a long weekend behaves like neither.
  3. If a meal is part of it: when does the kitchen stop? Pub hours, kitchen hours and gaming-area hours are three timetables, and typically only the first two appear online anywhere.

Our gaming-room checklist has the longer version of that list for anyone organising a group, where a single shut door inconveniences six people instead of one.

18+ only

Gaming areas in South Australia admit adults only, and staff are entitled to ask you to prove it. Losing money is the ordinary outcome of playing a gaming machine and nothing about it is guaranteed. Where gambling is causing harm to you or to someone near you, Gambling Help Online is free and open every hour of every day on 1800 858 858.

How much of this is actually published

The two venue names, the MacDonnell Street number and the facility lists come from the venue records this site already publishes for the region, reviewed 10 October 2026. The Angaston addresses come from Angaston Hotel's own website and from the South Australian Tourism Commission listing for Barossa Brauhaus Hotel. Nothing here states a machine count, a gaming-area opening time, a club entry rule or a street number for Tanunda Hotel, because none of those has been sourced; where a figure is missing on this page, it is missing on purpose.

Machines in this state run under the Gaming Machines Act 1992, with licensing and entitlement records held by Consumer and Business Services SA. The regulator is also the place to check the statewide limits on what a single spin may stake and pay; those ceilings are set by the Act and apply identically in every pub and club in South Australia, so there is nothing to be gained by shopping between valley towns for better terms.
